Hartley Bay

During the fall and winter of 2009/10, Taku River Tlingit First Nation mentored Hartley Bay and Dease River First Nations as part of a pilot mentorship stream, providing advice on micro hydroelectric project development and management. Taku River Tlingit First Nation is the owner and operator of a 2MW Atlin Hydroelectric project on Pine Creek, which was fully operational as of April, 2009 and displaces 1.5 million litres of diesel per year. The pilot mentorship was carried out with assistance from FBC and the Ministry of Energy.

“In a real sense, mentorship has saved us time and money and will improve the quality of the [micro-hydro] project.”
—Gitga’at First Nation

The RCI Program coordinates community-to- community mentorship stream to assist remote BC communities that are new to the development of energy efficiency and clean energy projects.

A mentorship with a community that is already experienced in energy efficiency or clean energy projects, can contribute to the overall success of a community project by increasing local knowledge, enhancing confidence and developing a support network. If your community is interested in participating in a mentorship, please contact Jim Vanderwal at:

Mentors are recognized as innovators and leaders through the mentorship program and gain excellent exposure. They will also have the satisfaction of providing a valuable service to another community.

Currently, the Fraser Basin Council and partners are delivering a Solar Community Mentorship Initiative.
