Plug-In Electric Vehicles

Green Fleets BC gets plugged in

Efforts are underway to support the introduction of electric vehicles in BC. To drive this clean energy initiative, the Province of British Columbia is working with BC Hydro, the Fraser Basin Council (Green Fleets BC program), City of Vancouver, Metro Vancouver, academic institutions and other interests: see PEV partnership.

The idea is to lay the groundwork and create the infrastructure for electric vehicles in BC.

Electrifying Fleets

The Fraser Basin Council’s Green Fleets program can help you electrify your fleet! Green Fleets is helping to lead the deployment of electric vehicles across the province, as part of the Plug-in Electric Vehicle initiative. Green Fleets BC is working with several automakers and with public and private sector fleets to facilitate the roll-out of first-release electric vehicles. Watch for vehicles such as the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Nissan LEAF, GM Volt and Toyota plug-in Prius among others being road tested in BC communities.

Why Go Electric?

Since 90 per cent of electricity generation in BC is clean energy, expanding the use of alternative energy vehicles, including electric vehicles, is an excellent opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector. Electric cars – including battery electrics, plug-in hybrids and hybrid vehicles – use electricity in whole or in part for powering vehicles. High-performance batteries store the electricity on-board the vehicle and use an electric motor to power the car.

Given a supportive policy environment and a receptive consumer market (BC has the highest hybrid adoption rate in Canada, 2.5 times higher than other provinces), this province is expected to have one of the highest electric vehicle adoption rates in North America. Major automakers have announced that plug-in vehicles are on the way, and early forecasts suggest that 10% to 60% of vehicles purchased by 2025 will be plug-in hybrid electric, or all electric.
