Pacific Salmon as a BC emblem?:
Report shows public support for the idea

(September 14, 2011) The Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF), Fraser Basin Council (FBC) and Living Rivers - Georgia Basin/Vancouver Island (LR-GB/VI) are asking the Province of BC to designate wild Pacific salmon as an emblem under the Provincial Symbols and Honours Act. The recommendation comes in a report released September 14 that shows public support for the idea.

In the report Do We Make it Official? Recognizing Pacific Salmon as a BC Emblem the three organiztions recommend that all seven Pacific salmon species (Chinook, Sockeye, Coho, Chum and Pink salmon, as well as Steelhead and Cutthroat Trout) be recognized collectively as BC's official fish. Such recognition is one way of increasing public understanding of the value of wild salmon and encouraging a widespread commitment to its future, as well as the health of BC's watersheds and water resources.

Copies of the report have been delivered to Premier Christy Clark, and Ministers Terry Lake (Environment), Steve Thomson (Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations), and Don McRae (Agriculture), and also to members of the Official Opposition. PSF, FBC and LR-GB/VI see this as a non-partisan issue that merits support across the Legislature.
