Water and Water Governance in BC
The Fraser Basin Council was pleased to facilitate four regional water governance workshops in Langley, Prince George, Nanimo and Kelowna in early 2008. The workshops were hosted by the BC Ministry of Environment, in partnership with Georgia Basin-Vancouver Island Living Rivers, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Council. The workshops welcomed federal, provincial, local and First Nations government participants, along with those in industry, agriculture and stewardship groups who together explored current water governance challenges in BC and opportunities for change.
Summary reports on the workshops are now available:
The Province of British Columbia has noted these workshops mark the start of of a dialogue on water governance that will continue with implementation of Living Water Smart: British Columbia's Water Plan. As reflected in the plan, the Province has committed to reviewing the Water Act and to ensure that, by 2012, water laws will improve the protection of ecological values, provide for more community involvement, and provide water efficiency incentives. As the Water Act review progresses, the Province has also promised more opportunities for dialogue and engagement on the topic of water governance.
