Shuswap Lake Watershed Poster Project

Shuswap watershed map

Just released - a poster of the Shuswap watershed, a partnership project led by SEAS to better acquaint residents, and youth in particular, with their region.

To learn more about the project, visit www.shuswapwatershed.ca.

The Shuswap Environmental Action Society (SEAS) has published the first-ever poster format map of the entire Shuswap Watershed.

SEAS President Jim Cooperman helped initiate the project, carried out by SEAS in partnership with federal, provincial and regional governments, First Nations, businesses and non-profit organizations, including the Fraser Basin Council.

Young people are a key focus. SEAS is printing 3,000 posters for free distribution in school classrooms, along with a student-teacher resource guide. As project coordinator Kim Fulton explains, “the overall educational goal is to help protect, preserve and restore the Shuswap watershed and ecosystems.”

The poster is expected to support a more in-depth appreciation of water resources. “This project is a step in helping us all understand that our actions influence water, wherever we live in the Shuswap watershed,” said Sarah Weaver of the Living by Water Project, one of the project partners. “The Watershed Project will be valuable for demonstrating the importance of wetlands, waterfowl, wildlife, and water resources to Shuswap communities.”

SEAS has other plans underway with a number of its partners to “Celebrate the Shuswap” during the week of April 18-24, 2010. This week of activities will include displays, tree planting, litter clean-up, storm drain marking, talks, hikes, and two major public events. For details, visit www.shuswapwatershed.ca.
