In Memory of Leona Humchitt

We wish to express our sadness on the recent passing of Leona Humchitt, and our condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and all who knew her. We at the Fraser Basin Council were fortunate to collaborate with Leona on several projects in her role as the Climate Action Coordinator for the Haiłzaqv Nation, where she brought incredible passion and dedication to her work. Leona organized the Haiłzaqv Renewable Diesel Evaluation Team, bringing Federal, Provincial, non-profit and business representatives together to test the use of renewable diesel for marine transportation in Haiłzaqv territory. She was a valued member of the working group that developed the CleanBC Remote Community Energy Strategy, contributing to decarbonization in remote communities.

Leona generously shared her knowledge at our 2023 EnergySave workshop where she presented on the Haiłzaqv Community Energy Plan, and at the Zero Emission Fleets: Reconnect 2025 event, where she spoke about electrifying Indigenous communities and advocated for a cleaner future. Leona’s collaboration and advocacy have made a deep and continuing impact, and we will miss her greatly.
