The Secwepemculucw Neƙw7úsem Tsertsrép (Shuswap Community Wildfire Roundtable) supports the effective coordination and communication of roles among the organizations responsible for different aspects of wildfire preparedness in Salmon Arm and surrounding areas.

Formed in February 2024, the Secwepemculucw Neƙw7úsem Tsertsrép (Shuswap Community Wildfire Roundtable) is addressing range of issues that assist with implementation of community wildfire resiliency and other types of wildfire risk reduction plans.

The Roundtable works to ensure good coordination and communication about who is doing what on wildfire preparedness, including on such issues as:

  • FireSmart education
  • Timber harvesting opportunities
  • Fuel management, all aspects including prescribed burning
  • Resources and capacity including emergency preparedness
  • First Nations traditional or cultural burning

Roundtable Composition

The Roundtable is composed of representatives from governments and organizations involved in all aspects of wildfire preparedness and risk reduction in the area. Participants are expected to include:

  • Columbia Shuswap Regional District
  • City of Salmon Arm
  • Secwepemc First Nations governments
  • Ministry of Forests
  • BC Wildfire Service
  • Volunteer fire departments and fire brigades
  • Forest tenure holders (community forest, woodlot licensees, major licensees, BC Timber sales)
  • Other organizations (e.g., emergency management and climate readiness)
