Announcing: An exciting ICSP Research Project: Community Sustainability Planning in Rural BC

The Fraser Basin Council’s Smart Planning for Communities Program (SPC) is pleased to announce the next phase in an exciting research project.  SPC is researching the application of Integrated Community Sustainability Planning (ICSP) by regional districts for rural areas and by small municipalities throughout British Columbia.  The project is funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions.

An online survey will be launched the week of September 12, 2011.  Invitations will be sent by e-mail to all regional districts (except Metro Vancouver) and to all municipalities with populations less than 10,000.  The survey is primarily for elected officials and senior staff, with a secondary audience of academics and experts.

Broadly speaking, the research is needed for BC because:

  • ICSP processes are required for both municipalities and regional districts as local governments under the Gas Tax Agreement, and to help meet climate change targets, policies and actions,
  • most research, experience and tools in BC regarding sustainable communities have been developed for and taken place in cities and urbanized settings,
  • local governments in BC’s rural areas need a made-in-BC approach to sustainability planning for rural communities.

The survey focuses on the elements that contribute to and pose challenges for successful processes, as well as the type of sustainability strategies that are suitable for rural areas and small towns in BC.

Sustainability in Rural BC: Survey Complete

Thank you to all the elected officials and senior staff from BC Regional Districts and municipalities with less than 10,000 citizens that participated in the rural planning survey.

The survey intended to help determine the elements that contribute to and pose challenges for a successful planning process within local governments as well as identify the type of sustainability strategies that are suitable for rural areas and small towns in BC. The project is funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions.

We will post the research and results on this website when they are ready.
